Ken Hughes

Chief Ken Hughes Ken Hughes started working for the Town of Fairfax as a Police Cadet in 1971. Ken became a Reserve Police Officer and served in that capacity from 1974 to 1978 and was hired as a full time Sworn Police Officer on October 1, 1978. Ken’s leadership and management potential was recognized by his promotion and appointment as Sergeant in 1982. When the Town Council tried to convince Ken to take the job of Chief in 1993 when Chief Potter retired, he politely but firmly declined the position. When the Town Council offered the job of Chief to Ken again in September of 1998, he finally accepted and excelled in that position for the next twelve years, finally retiring in August of 2010.

During his tenure, Chief Hughes earned the respect of the Town Council, his peers, and everyone who has worked with him due to his commitment, dedication, leadership, and conscientiousness while performing the extensive duties and responsibilities of the Chief of a 24/7 operation. Ken also played an integral role in promoting positive working relations and cooperation between the various employees and departments within the Town, and his unique sense of humor has entertained and uplifted the spirits of his fellow employees, council members, and many of the citizens of Fairfax. For all those good deeds and more, the 2011 Fairfax Festival has selected Chief Ken Hughes as its honorary Parade Marshal.
